How to Manage File Permissions

Managing file permissions allows you to set specific rules for who can access and modify the files on your website. There are two ways to manage file permissions, using cPanel and FTP.

Using cPanel:

  1. Log in to your cPanel account.
  2. Scroll down to the "Files" section and click "File Manager."
  3. Navigate to the file or folder whose permissions you want to change.
  4. Right-click on the file or folder and select "Change Permissions."
  5. In the "Change Permissions" window, you will see a numeric value that represents the permissions for that file or folder. You can change the permissions by checking or unchecking the boxes in the "Read," "Write," and "Execute" columns.
  6. Once you have made your changes, click the "Change Permissions" button to save your changes.

Using FTP:

  1. Connect to your web server using an FTP client (such as FileZilla). You can read more about how to connect using FileZilla here.
  2. Navigate to the file or folder whose permissions you want to change.
  3. Right-click on the file or folder and select "File Permissions" or "Properties."
  4. In the "File Permissions" or "Properties" window, you will see a numeric value representing the permissions for that file or folder. You can change the permissions by entering a new numeric value in the "Octal" or "Numeric" field.
  5. Once you have made your changes, click the "OK" or "Save" button to save your changes.

It's important to note that incorrect file permissions can cause security issues or prevent your website from functioning correctly. Always make sure to set your file permissions appropriately.
