How to Change Domain Name Servers

A domain name server, or DNS, is a server that translates a human-readable domain name, such as "example.com," into a machine-readable IP address, such as "192.168.0.1." This translation is necessary because computers communicate with each other using IP addresses. Without DNS, we would need to remember and enter long strings of numbers to access websites and other online services.

When you register a domain name with a provider, they provide you with default name servers responsible for resolving your domain name to the corresponding IP address. However, you may want to change your domain's name servers for a variety of reasons, including:

  1. Moving to a new hosting provider: If you're moving your website to a new hosting provider, you'll need to update your domain's name servers to point to the new hosting provider's servers. This ensures that your domain name resolves to the correct IP address and that visitors can access your website.
  2. Improving website performance: Using specialized DNS services, such as Cloudflare or Amazon Route 53, you can improve your website's performance using DNS caching and load balancing techniques.
  3. Security concerns: Changing your domain's name servers can also help protect your website from certain types of cyber attacks, such as distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks.

How to Change your domain name servers in N6 Cloud

If you've registered your domain with N6 Cloud, managing your domain is straightforward. Please follow these steps to change your domain's name servers.

Log in to your N6 Cloud Clients Area account.

Go to the N6 Cloud website and click on the "Clients Area" link in the homepage's upper right corner.

Enter your account email address and password, and click the "Submit" button.

Navigate to the "Domains" section of your dashboard.

Once logged in, click on Services>Domains in the left-hand menu.

Click on the domain name you want to change the name servers.

Locate the domain name that you want to change the name servers for in the list of domains.

Click on the domain name to view its details page.

Scroll down to the "Nameservers" section.

Once you're on the domain's details page, scroll down to the "Nameservers" section. Click the Nameservers link at the bottom.

Enter the new name servers you want to use.

Select "Custom" in the "General Settings" field, and enter the new name servers you want to use.

Enter the new name servers in the format your new hosting provider provided, usually ns1.example.com and ns2.example.com. Entering the wrong name servers will prevent your domain from being resolved.

Click "Save Changes."

Once you have entered the new name servers, click the "Save Changes" button at the bottom of the page.

The system will confirm that your changes have been saved.

Changes to DNS records can take up to 24-48 hours to propagate across the internet, so it may take some time for the new name servers to take effect. During this time, your website and email may experience intermittent downtime.

If you have any issues with changing your domain's name servers, you can contact N6 Cloud's support team for assistance.
