Generating CSR and Installing Signed SSL in cPanel

Generating a Certificate Signing Request (CSR) and installing a signed certificate on cPanel is essential for securing your website and protecting sensitive information. A CSR requests a certificate authority (CA) to verify your website identity and issue a certificate. On the other hand, a signed certificate is an encrypted digital document that provides proof of identity and secures communications between the website and its visitors. This article will demonstrate how to generate a CSR and install a signed certificate on cPanel, a popular web hosting control panel.

Step 1: Log into cPanel

To start the process, log in to your cPanel account using your username and password. Once logged in, scroll down to the “Security” section and click on “SSL/TLS”.

Step 2: Generate a CSR

Under the “SSL/TLS” section, click on “Generate, view, or delete SSL certificate signing requests”. On the next page, click on “Generate a New Certificate Signing Request (CSR)”.

You will be prompted to fill out a form with the following information:

  • Domain name: The domain name for which you want to generate the CSR.
  • City: The city where your business is located.
  • State/Province: The state or province where your business is located.
  • Country: The two-letter code for your country.
  • Company Name: The name of your company.
  • Company Division: The division of your company.
  • Email Address: Your email address.

Once you have filled out the form, click on “Generate” to generate the CSR. You will see a page with the generated CSR, which you can copy and paste into a text file for later use.

Step 3: Obtain a Signed Certificate

We offer a wide variety of SSL certificates. Choose a certificate that fits your website's needs and follow the steps to obtain a signed certificate. You will need to provide the CSR that you generated in step 2. Once you have received the signed certificate, download it and keep it safe for later use.

Step 4: Install the Signed Certificate

To install the signed certificate, return to the cPanel “SSL/TLS” section and click on “Generate, view, upload, or delete SSL certificates”.

On the next page, click “Choose File” and select the certificate you just received from the CA. Once you have selected the certificate, click on “Upload Certificate” to install it on your website.

Step 5: Configure the SSL Certificate

Once the certificate has been installed, you will need to configure it. To do this, go to the “SSL/TLS” section in cPanel and click on “Manage SSL Sites”. On the next page, select the domain name for which you installed the certificate and click on “Activate SSL on this domain”. This will activate the SSL certificate and secure your website.

Step 6: Test the SSL Certificate

The final step is to test the SSL certificate to ensure that it has been installed and configured correctly. To do this, open a web browser and navigate to your website using the HTTPS protocol (e.g. https://www.example.com). If everything is working correctly, you should see a padlock icon in the browser address bar.
